Profile of Northeast Migrants : A Case study of Informal Sector Workers in Bengaluru

Abstract

Migration through history has played the role of transitioning mankind, the socioeconomic and political structures of the world. It has only gained more momentum in the transformation of cities and has facilitated the process of urbanization and globalization to a further extent since the period of industrialization that saw mankind associate itself with the contribution of labour, economic development and the growth around itself. This also has its negatives as researches have approached it stating that migration is nothing but a failure of the economic structure of the country. In recent times to develop better living conditions and skill development amongst them if there were a condition of reverse migration it may only support them as they will be able to contribute economically and will be more aware of the importance of skill development and other basics necessities such as health care and women empowerment. The issues here as we notice is the protection of the rights of the migrants while they reside within the cities. The importance of them being included in the urban amenities that are provided and the overall aspect of inclusion. In this study we look areas of Indiranagar, Koramangala and Ejipura where we have profiled workers from the hospitality and food, beauty care industries, domestic helps and securities. From 3 of the North-eastern states with special reference to West Bengal and Nepal. The study studies the gaps that exist in the current implementation of the labour codes regarding protection of unorganized/migrant/self-employed labour workers.
